"Hands on top, everybody stop."
A few parents have said that they have heard their child saying this phrase at home :) and we are so happy to hear that! We say this everyday and we wait until everyone in the room takes a moment to "stop, look and listen." Each and every day in Room 8 we are working on character education. The District School Board of Niagara has a list of traits that each school strives to develop in our students. At Fitch Street School we celebrate students who have been successful with these traits each month in our Student Recognition Assembly.
As teachers, we work diligently to model these traits. We model through actions and words and we ask the students to practice them as well. During times of conflict resolution and shared discussion, the children certainly respond to guided modelling. Your child is working really hard to learn what these words mean and how to use them everyday. Here are some of the words we say and hear in our room:
"We take care of our friends."
"We cooperate."
"Everybody helps."
We think out loud every day: "Am I doing my best?"
"We fix our mistakes and make things better (because everyone makes mistakes)."
"Our hands are for helping. Are you helping?"
We ask, "Look at ____'s face. How are they feeling?"
We say, "I am sorry."
We ask, "Are you okay?"
"We listen to each other."
"We think hard about things."
"We raise our hands to wait our turn."
"Give me 5! Criss-cross applesauce, hands in your lap, eyes looking at me, ears ready for listening, and lips zipped!"
We say, "Please and Thank you!"
We ask, "May I play too?"
"We talk about how we feel."
"We use words to solve our problems."
"We share our thinking."
"We are proud of our hard work."
"We use kind words."
"We cooperate."
